Saturn’s Version of True Love

As a general rule we don’t see Saturn as having anything to do with love, especially “True Love” – that belongs to lovely Venus and oh so romantic Neptune. However Saturn in Libra, the sign of partnerships and one-on-one relationships, can move beyond the legalities and into the arena of love.

A Saturn kind of love starts with the commitment and is built upon a foundation of common interests and needs rather than soulful looks and candlelit dinners for two. The story of Sarah in “Sarah, Plain & Tall” who travels from New England to the Midwest to marry a widowed farmer with two children is also the story of learning to love someone over time. Sarah was a spinster who answers an ad placed in a newspaper by Jacob, who is looking for a new wife to look after his children and take care of their home. Since this IS just a story, the two people come to love each other after undergoing many trials and tribulations and all ends well.

If you think this story has no relevance to today, think about all those folks who meet online in various and sundry match making sites and end up arranging to meet in real life. The key is being as honest and open as is humanly possible with yourself and your potential partner . . . no rose colored glasses allowed! Another thing to keep in mind is one of Saturn in Libra’s favorite solutions, and that is compromise.

With Saturn there is always the danger of rigidity and behaving in a cold, authoritarian manner, often used to disguise underlying feelings of insecurity and fear of rejection. As a means to sabotage budding relationships, both tactics are quite effective. Moving past our fears and allowing ourselves to be vulnerable opens the door to unconditional love, Saturn style.

Saturn does encourage us to learn to accept ourselves warts and all but it does take effort to get there. The beauty of learning to accept ourselves with unflinching honesty and an open heart is we become far, far better potential partners. No doubt this is part of why Saturn is exalted in Libra.

When we grow to deeply love first ourselves and then another under Saturn’s tutelage it is often after our first Saturn Return, when hopefully we have gained a measure of maturity. Please bear in mind the old adage about “the stars incline, not compel” and we always have free will to choose to pass on Saturn’s lessons or learn from them.

On August 21, 2010 Pluto in Capricorn will make one last square to Saturn in Libra, a month after the final Saturn-Uranus opposition in Aries and Libra on July 26. Both of these aspects are bound to make relationships far more contentious in the short term and while they may introduce us to some of those warts, it might be better to wait until the dust settles before reopening negotiations with your partner!

For now, we can contemplate the possibility there is another path to love, strewn with boulders but ultimately rewarding. So set aside the Twilight series and watch Sarah, Plain and Tall instead, and entertain the idea of living for love instead of dying for it. Hey, Saturn will be in Libra for two more years so we have time (also a Saturn thing)! :D

  • How funny…I wrote a blog on Saturn love too today.

  • I misread that book title and thought it said “Sarah Palin & Tall.”

My natal Saturn is opposite my Ascendant in my seventh house – while I don’t think I’m particularly rigid or authoritarian, I am certainly guarded and have been described as intimidating. (Which is almost ironic since I’m physically the opposite of intimidating at 4’10″ and 100 lbs.) I’ve been exploring my seventh house lately and have started to really identify with the Saturnine themes.

I have about five years until my Saturn return, and I’m pretty interested in how it’s going to play out, given the opposition to my Ascendant and the fact that he’ll be moving across natal Pluto and the Moon.

LOL! Funny how others perceive us sometimes. “Guarded” is something I associate more with Scorpio? Are your Moon & Saturn in Scorp or Libra?

Generally speaking, Saturn on the DES will act like Saturn in Libra and make you far less likely to be impulsive about getting into any type of legally binding partnership, marriage or business. That’s serious business for you.

Ah, a bit younger than that. My Saturn is in Sagittarius, but yes, my Moon is in Scorpio. Intercepted there, no less. But guarded is a fair description, particularly with emotions; unless I want you to know what I feel, you won’t.

Binding partnerships ARE a big deal for me. Recent explorations of my seventh house also brought to light some of the Uranian themes that are present with him there as well. When I stop to focus on specific facets of my chart, things start to really crystalize. I dig it.

Astrology is amazing stuff all right! Hey, if you are comfortable with sending me your birth data, please do so. Use the form on “About Diane” page. I NEVER share that kind of info but it allows me to give better quality responses to your questions & comments. Most of my long time regulars have done so. :)

Love that book. I am glad to have you as we enter Saturn in Libra for a good long stretch!

    • Diane L

      Thanks, Jessica!!

Though Saturn won’t hit our 29 Libra Suns until January 2012, it will hang out there for a couple of months. Having said that, I will now go back to ignoring it!! :P

  • I was mesmerized by that movie and I mean, enthralled.

Saturn will station right on my Libra North Node in 2012. I’m going to just ignore that for now, too!

  • Hi Diane xo

As you know, my husband and I are a very Saturn couple, sharing a square with our natal Saturn’s. Our relationship is very strong as our core beliefs regards hard work (how saturn is that lol except with my Cap moon, I work harder :P ) and life/humanity are like mirrors. We are committed and work as hard for our relationship as we do for our mortgage. We laugh a lot too. I can imagine though, if this square was evolving negatively how cold a Saturn square could be in a synastry :S

Hey Karen!! :D Good to “see” you!

I can imagine though, if this square was evolving negatively how cold a Saturn square could be in a synastry.

Of course, it depends on the Saturn in each chart as well as the maturity level of the individuals. Those with a strong Saturn influence such as yourself start learning early on about what it takes to get the job done and a strong Saturn signature in your synastry is something you can handle.

    Hi!
I’m just getting into understanding my chart, and I’m confused on something. How do you know which planets have the strongest influences in your chart? For me, my Saturn is in Cap in the 2nd house, and it conjuncts Neptune, opposition Jupiter, and trine Midheaven. I’m trying to see how Saturn will affect me (sun in Leo) or just get a better understanding of my chart in general! Help? :)
    -Steph

      Welcome Steph!

Without seeing your chart as a whole, I am hesitant to say. If you wish, please send me your birth data using the form on my “About Diane” page and I will take a quick look. If you wish more feedback we can discuss a paid consult of some kind too.

      Thanks!

    Saturn in libra:
    I know you love me.
    You know I love you.
    No words needed.
appreciation in the quiet moment says it all
Have I done everything I can for you ,my love?
    My mind ponder.
Knowing what you need and be your servant is my highest good.
In this helpless love I know that you, are by far, better,
    being my servant.

I have Saturn Conj. Mars in the 12th with a man I am in love with…but my Mars is on the cusp of the 12th and his Mercury is in my 11th. We have been going back and forth about him not wanting a relationship…my Venus is in his 7th and opposes his moon. We get along like a house on fire. I am not sure why we are not able to progress…except for Saturn which is now in his 5th house and in my 11th. I love your blog!!
